AIFA National Report 2019 'The use of antibiotics in Italy'

On 29 December, the 2019 National Report 'The use of antibiotics in Italy' was presented, which provides data and analysis on consumption and expenditure trends in Italy for antibiotics for human use.

You can read it here: https://www.aifa.gov.it/l-uso-degli-antibiotici-in-italia%C2%A0

Our highlights:

  • In 2019, antibiotic consumption in Italy is unchanged compared to 2018 (21.4 DDD/1000 inh. die) and remains above the European average
  • There is considerable variability in regional use with higher values in the South than in Central and Northern Italy. The differences concern the number of prescriptions and the type of antibiotics prescribed
  • Regional variability and wide seasonal fluctuations in consumption suggest a use that is not always appropriate
  • Fluoroquinolone consumption is reduced but areas of inappropriateness remain
  • 2016-2019: consumption in contracted care (provided by public and private pharmacies) reduced by 5.8%, below the target set by the National Antibiotic Resistance Plan (PNCAR) for 2020 (reduction >10%)
  • 2016-2019: hospital consumption increased, despite the slight reduction observed in the last year, while the PNCAR target was a reduction >5%
